Five for Friday: Douluo Dalu

Friday of December 02, 2016

Recently I have been reading fantasy novels written by Chinese or Japanese writers with genere related to leveling. Stories with multi-level player themes are somewhat contenporary novels that have some an appeal specially for the generation who likes to play video games.

Short Novel: Douluo Dalu by Tang Jia San Shao

I haven't read a lot of casual novels but this one of my top list Duoluo Dalu English Translation. It reading the short novels have a feel of playing a role-playing game. It has the enjoyment of progression, battle and suspense.

Liferay: Quick Release

I have been working on a simple hack and slash indie game. It doesn't use the usual platform game plugin but it instead I allow background and monster movement to simulate character motion.

Gamedev: Templates and Level Configuration insights

Being a busy software developer and dad, doing game development is really a low priority. To compensate time, I usually need to plan and invest more time in creating repeatable template, reusable graphics and limited set of genre. A few learning from creating a leveling template is playability timing and monster gain. In creating RPG games usually players kill monsters to gain experience and after gaining experience it gains levels. The balance for monsters and leveling is important for gamer. Thus after I few tries and read a few guide, I summarize the important note in creating template monster experience and leveling.

  • Time to level-up, it is important to define how fast player progress to simulate achievement
  • Kill time, how long to kill an enemy. This is important to identify the first note.
  • Balance of stats and kills. It is important to factor-in stats to compute for the desired leveling time.
Overall I have created a table sheet to compute the required values. It is important to have this guide to avoid the repetitive task to leveling balance.

Devops: Stress and Value

Developers now a days can't just do pure coding. Most of the time, we also are required to do some degree of second tier customer interface, deployments, some server configurations and other operational supports. Some might feel burdened by these demands because non-specialized skills might lead to disastrous configurations and stressful loads. My two-cents on this is projects that require devops is actually good for developers. It allows them to be flexible and a round-housed employee. Like all new things, the learning curve is steep but having a devops mindset makes one extremely versatile and valuable. There are always an exception, not everyone can do devops work mindset. Some people will really do better being focus on a specific role and task.

Down Syndrome: Jace Facial Habits

Jace facial expression and habits is really one of the traits that separates him from the rest. At a young age training is important but it is also important to understand why they have such behavior. Usually its based on low muscle tone and slow reflexes, knowing the physical cause of these behaviors can help us understand and plan more on how to approach their training exercises.
